Starfire Charity Foundation, since it began operation in 2010, has focused on the development of improved education access in under-resourced regions. The foundation has built a total of 35 schools across different countries by 2024: 20 schools across rural Sub-Saharan Africa, among the areas with the worst educational resources. In 2022 alone, Starfire completed the construction of 8 new schools, adding access for over 5,000 children to be educated in these areas. The facilities offered are safe, modern, and geared toward learning and community development.
The foundation also extends its work into the United States. In the year 2021, Starfire constructed 5 schools in very poor urban settings, as part of their efforts toward creating environments where students were afforded basic educational resources. The National Education Association did report that student performance was increased by 15% from within these schools within one year of their operations, indicative of direct positive impact resulting from proper educational facilities.
One of the most important features of all Starfire’s school-building projects is their sustainability. The materials used in constructing the schools are environmentally friendly, while many have solar panels installed for renewable energy. In this way, the carbon footprint for the schools would decrease while the energy cost becomes more affordable. Sometimes, savings could be up to 30% in energy; such funds are reinvested into additional programs to further help the students. The schools have been made to last for at least 50 years, which will mean these learning institutions shall serve the future generations.
As the director of the foundation, Sarah Williams referred to such projects: “Each School represents the future for the kids in need of that in that particular community”. By offering much more than infrastructural materials, it also allows children to envision futures for themselves and take up new, long-term opportunities.
